Izumi Samurai District

As the largest samurai district in the Satsuma Domain, this area retains the historic streetscapes of the Edo Period.
Designated as an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings by the Japanese government, the region preserves street layouts dating back approximately 400 years, along with beautifully stacked riverstone walls and lush green hedges.
Visitors can enjoy sightseeing by ox-drawn carriage, visiting the history museum and various open samurai residences, or taking part in kimono-wearing experiences that look splendid against the refined, traditional backdrop.
